Local People at the Heart of Wildlife Conservation

Wildlife stewardship means enabling people who live alongside wildlife to participate directly in its protection. BIOCOS Nepal works with local scouts, herders, citizen scientists and community institutions, combining their knowledge of the landscape with scientific conservation methods.

What We Do

• Recruit and train local wildlife scouts and field rangers

• Support regular wildlife observations and field patrols

•  Install and maintain camera traps

• Record wildlife signs, movements and threats

• Combine local ecological knowledge with scientific monitoring

• Strengthen local leadership, employment and responsibility for conservation

• Connect communities with researchers and conservation authorities

Where We Work

Manang and the high Himalayas

Snow Leopard Scouts monitor snow leopards, blue sheep, musk deer and other high-mountain wildlife. They conduct patrols, operate camera traps and document wildlife observations and threats.

Dhaulagiri Landscape

Local scouts and community members support red panda surveys, camera trapping, habitat assessment and protection of important forest areas.

Pipar Pheasant Conservation Landscape

Local youth patrol pheasant habitats, monitor wildlife and help protect an important Himalayan forest landscape from hunting and snaring.

Pokhara Valley

Local committees and caretakers contribute to vulture conservation through safe-feeding-site management, livestock care and regular monitoring.
