Dr. Jeff R. Muntifering is an internationally respected conservation biologist whose pioneering work has helped shape community-based wildlife conservation in Africa and beyond. For more than two decades, he has worked at the intersection of conservation science, community stewardship, wildlife monitoring, ecotourism, and social and behavioural change, developing practical approaches that enable local communities and threatened wildlife to thrive together.
Dr. Muntifering is internationally recognised for advancing community-led approaches to large-mammal conservation. He co-founded and continues to advise Namibia’s award-winning Conservancy Rhino Ranger programme, which trains, equips, and supports local people to monitor and protect black rhinos across vast and rugged landscapes.
His work extends far beyond conventional wildlife monitoring and anti-poaching. Recognising that lasting conservation depends on people’s values, aspirations, and sense of ownership, Dr. Muntifering has helped pioneer innovative conservation outreach and behavioural-change initiatives. These include the Rhino Pride Campaign; the Rhino Cup Champions League, one of Africa’s largest rural youth football initiatives linked to wildlife conservation; and Reading with Rhinos, which connects literacy and education with conservation among children living alongside wildlife. Together, these programmes demonstrate his distinctive ability to combine conservation science with creativity, education, sport, and community pride.
Dr. Muntifering’s interdisciplinary research bridges wildlife ecology, conservation biology, rural development, ecotourism, social psychology, and human behaviour.
Dr. Muntifering contributes to international conservation through several global networks and partnerships. He is a member of multiple IUCN Species Survival Commission Specialist Groups and serves as Co-Vice Program Leader of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ SAFE Black Rhino programme. He also advises Round River Conservation Studies and has contributed to international collaborations and large-mammal conservation initiatives across Africa and Asia.
